Understanding loan eligibility

What lenders commonly look at before a personal loan, and what an indicative checker can and cannot tell you.

Eligibility · Updated 19 October 2026 · 7 min read

Eligibility is the lender's judgement that you fit a product and that they are willing to lend. It is not a single number. Two lenders can look at the same person and reach different decisions, because their rules, funds, and risk appetite are not the same.

What is commonly reviewed

  • Income and how regular it is.
  • Whether you are salaried, self-employed, or in another kind of work.
  • How long you have been in that work.
  • Existing EMIs and other obligations.
  • Credit history, where the lender uses a bureau.
  • The amount and tenure you want, against the product's own limits.
  • Age, residence, and documents the lender is required to collect.

A lender may also look at recent enquiries, bounced payments, or the purpose of the loan. None of that is visible from a marketing form, and it should not be guessed.

What Zup Loans checks in this demo

The eligibility form compares your amount, tenure, work type, and income range with rules stored on the published records. If your credit-score band is “I don't know”, the record is not rejected for that reason. The result is marked as limited, because a lender might still ask for a score.

A match means the stored rule was met. It does not mean a lender has approved you, reserved a limit, or agreed to a rate. A result with no match only means these published records do not cover that combination. Another lender might.

What the form does not collect

The first enquiry does not ask for Aadhaar, a PAN image, bank statements, net-banking passwords, or a banking OTP. Those do not belong in a comparison form. A regulated lender may ask for identity and income proofs later, on its own application, and should tell you why.

Keep the decision with the lender

If a website says everyone is approved, or that money will arrive in minutes regardless of your circumstances, treat that as a sales line. Check who the lender is and read the sanction terms before you accept a loan.
